For those who are dedicated to getting fit and squeezing in a daily workout no matter what, home workouts are a great way to do this. You don’t always need advanced gym equipment in order to get an effective workout. DVDs and portable equipment have made this possible. If this is your preferred workout method of choice, however, you should definitely consider some of the common mistakes so that you can avoid making them and stay safe throughout your workouts.
1)Not pushing yourself hard enough: When you are at home by yourself and have no one there to motivate you or keep you on your toes, it is easy to slack off in both cardio and weight training exercises. It is easy to turn your “high knees” into half knees and if you only have a pair of 5-pound weights at home, you will not be able to advance and push yourself to the next level when the time comes. In order to avoid this mistake, try doing workouts that offer moderate and more advanced levels so that you can train at the proper level. Also, alter your workouts often, so that once you do get used to one method, you can up the reps or do whatever you need to increase the intensity.
2)Un-changing home workouts: Similarly, even if you have found what you believe to be an intense home video, doing that same routine on a daily basis may make it lose its effectiveness. Therefore, switching up your routine is essential. Pushing yourself hard is one thing, but if you are pushing yourself to the same level each time, you are not growing fitness-wise and you may eventually plateau.
3)Too Much Cardio: In order to make you sweat, many home DVDs are filled with cardio exercises, although a good and effective workout video should contain a combination of both cardio and strength moves. You will still break a sweat, but this way you will really be working on changing your shape and seeing results.
4)Too long: Another issue is when your workout DVD is too long or maybe even too intense. It is a good idea to have a plethora of home workouts to choose from. This way, you won’t be tempted to skip a workout just because you don’t feel like eating up an hour of your time. Also, if you have less energy one day, it helps to have a less intense exercise option.
5)Too much too Soon: Keeping in the theme of excess, overdoing your workouts in the beginning of your routine can lead you to fail later down the line. If you decide to begin a home workout routine, you should ease into it and build the intensity as you go.
6)Failing to use Provided Tools: Many workout series come with a couple of tools that can be used for guidance. Whether it is a dietary guide or workout calendar, usually these tools have been put together strategically and increase the effectiveness of your workout, so you should use them.
7)Inconsistency: There is always the likelihood of falling off of any workout regimen, but especially when your workout area is inside your home, you may be even more prone to doing so. To avoid this, carving out a specific time and keeping a schedule may be useful.
8)Using bad form: One benefit of using the gym is that it is equipped with mirrors and workout buddies to ensure that you are using proper form. If you are just looking at the TV screen or using a machine in your home, it may feel like you are using proper form, but you may not be which can lead to ineffectiveness and even injury.
9)Skipping the Warm-up: Without a formal routine set up, you may miss important pieces like the warm-up which is important to get you into the flow of the workout as well as prevent injury. This is where DVDs and guideline tools come in handy, as they often include the important components.
10)Putting too much emphasis on Weight: If your only measurement of success is the scale, then you should consider alternative ways to see if you are improving with your home workouts. Clothing size, how you feel, how you look, etc. These are all alternative and maybe even better ways to measure your home workout success.
Besides these top ten common home workout mistakes, you also want to make sure your routine is balanced as well as your diet. If the main component of your home workouts is a DVD routine, make sure that you select a quality series, such as BeachBody. This will set you on a proper path of having a well-rounded home workout all while avoiding some of these most common mistakes.
Oops – I made at least 4 of these mistakes on a regular basis. Thanks for opening my eyes on these important details.

Love it Elena. I haven’t been to a gym in over a decade and I am in the best shape of my life.
Hi Elena,
You are so right about everything in your post because I have done many of them.
What worked best for me when it comes to home workouts is starting off slow in the beginning and then, over time increasing the time and intensity of my workouts.
take care.
